Update: Operation Share a Room
Mostly a failure. I think we learned some good lessons and we can move on, but it was not great.
We were expecting a few days of transition but instead I think we need a few stages of transition.
Point A (where we are):
Milo now sleeps in a pack n play in the office, while Holden has his room to himself. Holden sleeps 12 hours with occasional shout-outs. Milo sleeps the same set of hours but wakes several times: one feeding and 2-3 occasions where Alec will plug him up with a paci. Holden sleeps for one three-hour nap. Milo naps for about an hour at a time every other hour.
Point B (the dream sleep state):
Both boys sleep 12 hours through the night in a shared room. And they have common naptimes.
What happened last night:
Milo started strong by falling asleep in the new surrounding while Holden recognized this opportunity to infinitely stall his own going to bed process.
Milo did his usual wake-ups all night long (with a couple more thrown in) and rather than letting him work it out on his own (as we’d love to do eventually), we were over-responding with about seven visits to tend to him. By 3:35am, I pulled him out of the shared quarters for life back in the office.
In the morning, Holden bragged to anyone who would listen that Milo and he now share a room.
The new action plan:
We’re gonna keep putting them down together to encourage them to get used to each other and the new setup while secretly moving Milo into the office before we go to bed in order that Milo can learn to sleep on his own. And so that we can learn the same.
At least until tomorrow…
