Two thirds of the way there…

Filed under: baby — Heather @ 3:50 pm

Yep, Alec said it, “we’re two thirds of the way to three months” (when things supposedly get a little easier on the way to six months where things really get better).

Here’s the answer to the contest:

Flibbs babies one month

The little boy in blue is Holden at one month and the little one in yellow is Milo.

Thanks for playing!

We had a power outage yesterday which means I can’t access our month two photos just now. It also means that I had an extra help in avoiding TV for the week as part of TV TurnOff Week. I only cheated to watch Heroes on Friday. Not bad.

The contest: Month One

Test yourself! Which boy is which? See if you can guess which one-month old is Holden and which is Milo without looking through the gallery. And don’t worry if you can’t guess. Some very close relatives have already been stumped by this test. And the only one who got it right had some extra help!

Results will be posted in a week. Guesses should be left as comments. Good luck.

Trust and the two year old

Filed under: baby — Alec @ 8:54 pm

Sometimes I wonder if Milo is going to live in his brother’s shadow. Sure, Holden is older and is going to seem more advanced for a long time, but I also think Milo is simply going to have trouble getting a word in edgewise.

This week we got our usual e-mail from Babycenter telling us about our 23 month old. For those of you not familiar with the wonders of internet-based parenting advice, Babycenter is the go-to site for knowing exactly what would make your child normal each month, if there’s actually such thing as a normal child.

For the most part Holden falls in the range of “normal” - he’s getting quite adept at actual running without the “toddler trot” and his love/hate relationship with Broccoli and Yogurt is exactly what you’d expect for someone almost 2 years old.

This is where Holden doesn’t “fit the mold”.. This week our edition of “Your 23 month old” said this:

By 23 months, your child can probably hum and sing and make three-word sentences like “Bird fly high.”

A few weeks ago, Holden watched me yank the bag from his Diaper Champ and run outside to make sure his latest deposits made it out to the curb. Moments later, the garbage truck arrived and the men promptly took our garbage. Holden’s evaluation of the situation? “Garbage truck takes Holden’s poopy diapers away.”

And tonight he constructed a sentence with an even more impressive, if subtle, detail. We have this little chair that both he and Milo share. Sometimes Milo sits in the chair while Holden eats dinner and Holden gets a little jealous. We’ve taken to calling this the “family chair.” When Holden gets jealous, we tell him it’s Milo’s turn to sit in the family chair. Tonight during dinner he asked to sit in the chair: “Holden sit in family chair” I explained that no, it was time to eat dinner and he could sit in the chair after dinner. He looked at me, pointed at Heather, and with a straight face replied, “Mommy said, ‘Please Holden sit in familiy chair’”

The trick here isn’t that he’s quoting his mom. The trick is that this is an utter lie. He completely made up the fact that Heather asked him to sit there!

So I’m sure in 5 years when they really learn to personalize these Babycenter newsletters, some family of a 23 month old out there will be told: “Your son will learn to lie this month.”
