Baby brain meets home improvement

Filed under: baby — Heather @ 4:20 pm

We’ve spent the past week moving our kitchen to our dining room, our living room to the office, and the office to the living room. All the while, Holden has been very curious, confused and slightly annoyed. When the demolition of our kitchen starts tomorrow, we won’t be able to inhabit the front of the house anymore.

So, we’ve babyproofed the office during naps, hauled all the food to various parts of the house (can’t live without –> go to the office or bathroom; stores well –> go to the dining room; we don’t know why we have you at all –> please leave through the kitchen garbage), bought a mini fridge, and now all that’s left is that we pack for our 6am flight tomorrow.

Wish us well, the contractor thinks we’ll be back in the East Wing of the house by Christmas. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures of the previous misadventures on our gallery page. Photos of mayhem and madness to come.

The dishwasher comes today

Filed under: home — Heather @ 11:08 am

I know it won’t be installed for another couple (painful and dusty) months, but I can’t help but get excited about this little development. When we first decided to live together in SF, we had “dishwasher” on our must-list. But we found a charming little apartment in Cole Valley that had everything else going for it (including a window that opened from the kitchen to the bathroom!), so we cheerfully did dishes together.

When we looked for houses in Berkeley, again we added “dishwasher” to the must-list — it’s such a great appliance and can prevent so many messes and subsequent squabbles. When shopping for houses, most had dishwashers or at least hook-ups; we didn’t think we’d have to compromise again. Ahh, but again, we found a cute little bungalow in the more affordable part of town that didn’t have a dishwasher. Instead of cheerfully doing dishes together, we had a baby and made up a schedule. Alec does the odd days and I do the even days. That also means that about 5 times a year, Alec does dishes two nights in a row.

But yippeeeeeeee, it’s coming this afternoon!

And away we go!

Good Green Kitchens
Yesterday, I met with the kitchen designer at EcoHome to get started. By 4:30 she was crawling around our kitchen taking measurements. She gave us this handy reference book as a thank you gift.

Holden compares sinksAt 5:00, our family hit the Home Depot Expo as a big outing in order to find out if we had strong feelings about sinks or dishwashers. It turns out that we do. At 11:00pm, we had ordered a dishwasher. This morning, Alec started bidding on ebay sinks… and we’re off!
