The kid is one week shy of eleven months… and then one month shy of a year. At one year, he is allowed by the AAP to drink cow’s milk. Sure, I drank 2% milk at 3 months, but modern medicine tells us to wait. So, we wait.

But it is not that simple. There is trouble in dairyland! First, our formula-of-choice for the past few months has been Horizon Organic, and, what was last week on sale at Whole Foods for $15 is now selling on eBay for $80. Our formula is out of business and Berkeley moms are going mental about it.

What about other organic formulas? Well, it turns out there is only one other… and Baby’s Only calls itself a toddler formula. WTF? Don’t babies drink formula and toddlers drink cow’s milk?! Well, it is easier to pass the FDA calling yourself a toddler formula… so that’s what they’ve done. And the first ingredient is sugar (well, organic brown rice syrup… so its fancy organic sugar).

So maybe we can phase in cow’s milk a little early? Ha ha. There’s all this hub-bub and controversy in the organic milk world now too. This New York Times article calls organic milk a gateway to other organic food and highlights how those who we thought were good aren’t really so good after all. Here’s the original study. And here’s yet another article outlining the controversy (in a nutshell: favoritism to small farms over large made the study unequal from participation down to ratings).

I spoke with our fantastic pediatrician about a plan to start giving him cow’s little by little mixed with his sugary formula until it’s 100% cow’s milk by one year. She didn’t love the plan, but said it sounded ok.

In the meantime, I’m experimenting with tahini instead of peanut butter. And that’s fun.
